At the choice of the shipowner, the Maritime Safety Inspectorate (KDI) of the Maritime Administration of Latvia or the classification society recognised by it (KS) shall perform supervision of the fulfilment of the requirements of the ISM Code for cargo ships of 500 gross tonnage and above engaged in international navigation and passenger ships, as well as the shipping companies managing such ships. Supervision of the fulfilment of the requirements of the ISM Code of cargo ships of 500 gross tonnage and above and passenger ships involved in cabotage shipping, as well as of the shipping companies managing such ships, shall be performed only by the Maritime Safety Inspectorate of the Maritime Administration of Latvia. In order to verify compliance with the requirements of the ISM Code or Regulation (EC) No 336\/2006, the KDI or the KS shall verify the safety management system of the company and its ships, in accordance with Resolution A. 1071 of the International Maritime Organisation (28), Guidelines to be taken into account by administrations in implementing the ISM Code, and issue or approve the relevant certificates.
